THERE IS NO 'THEM'
Race & Racism Today
Welcome back to our conversation, “There is no ‘them’”. We’ve been away for some time and are ready to take up our conversation again.
We’re going to begin with Layla Saad’s book, Me and White Supremacy. This book is laid out as a daily journey over a month. You may or may not find it helpful to be poked this way, particularly over a period of time, but Saad offers a number of things we should think about [we’ve spent some time with some of these earlier…] if we want to think about imagining a different sort of world. These sessions will be January 6, 13 and 20.
In our next set of conversations, we’ll think about law and justice. We’ll watch Netflix’s 13th and the movie Just Mercy. We’ll talk a bit about the best ways to access these in our time together. This will be on February 3 and 10.
Ami Jackisch let me know about a special two-part series February 16 and 23 on PBS, “The Black Church.”
It will be good for us to watch these as our final series of conversations – February 24 – April 7 – will talk about theological questions, particularly those raised by the American theologian James Cone and the pastor William J. Barber want us to ask ourselves as Christians. In these weeks, we’ll work on those things we saw in the PBS series [February 24], Cone’s book The Cross and the Lynching Tree and Barber’s sermon “We are called to be a Movement,” available as a book and for listening HERE
The Link to join our Zoom Class remains the same, if you are new or interested in joining please sign up below to receive the link!
I look forward to seeing you Wednesday evenings!
As always, please feel free to invite a friend to join us.
