Can you draw a picture of Trinity English Lutheran Church? If so, what would it look like? The easiest answer might be a picture of our great, iconic building. But Trinity really isn’t just a building, no matter how great that building is. Our ministry, our history even, is more than our church home. We are also more than any pastor or any group or program as well. In 1846, a small group of people started a church with an eye to the community and the future - that’s why the “English” is in our name. They knew Jesus was doing new things in their lives and in the community around them. We know that Jesus is still doing new things - in our lives and in the world around us. But how do you draw a picture of this?
A few of us asked this very question, how do you draw a picture of Trinity English Lutheran Church? A traditional symbol of the Holy Trinity is three interlocking circles, an image of God; Father, Son and Holy Spirit in unity and harmony with each other. Some Christians have also thought that the Trinity is a sign of who we are to be as well, people who live in unity and harmony with God, with each other and the world around them. We use the words, “Working together to change the world through Jesus” to say just a bit of what that means to us: together, the whole world, Jesus.
With our logo we are trying to show, in a picture, what we think this might look like. If you look at the logo, you will see the traditional three interlocking circles, a traditional symbol for a place and a people with a deep and grand tradition. But if you look closely you may notice that the circles aren’t just circles - they just might be three people. They could be the three members of the Holy Trinity, joined together and holding hands in their unity and harmony. They may also be God who is holding our hand and the hand of the hand of someone somewhere in the world. We could imagine God holding our hand giving us strength and vision for God’s work in the world. Being connected to God also connects us to the world around us, the world that God loves so much.
Since 1846 Trinity English Lutheran Church has been a group of Christians who have been willing to trust God enough to do new things when necessary and allow the world to see the work of Jesus in our lives. Hand-in-hand with God and our neighbors, Jesus continues to change the world.
