“Away in a manger, no crib for a bed, the little Lord Jesus laid down his sweet head.”
Many of us learned this lovely carol as small children. It speaks deeply to several truths about our Lord, truths Jesus himself spoke of. Jesus came to be present in our world, even when his presence was unexpected. Our Lord’s first bed was a borrowed bed and, in fact, was no bed at all but the hay of an animal’s feed trough.
This year our Angel Tree Ministry is focused on collecting offerings for bedding for 250 beds in the new Fort Wayne Rescue Mission. That’s $10,000 or $40 per bed.* This will provide mattresses, sheets and blankets and pillows. Once, Jesus said, “Truly I tell you, just as you did it to one of the least of these who are members of my family, you did it to me.” [Matthew 25:40] Twice, at his birth and at his death, someone lent Jesus a bed to rest in. Following his example, perhaps we can do the same for some of his children seeking to bring new order to their lives.
